Words and deeds: an evening with artist Hugh Buchanan

Written by on April 30, 2014

This year we’re taking part in Festival of Museums – It’s the first time we’ve taken part and we’re very much looking forward to the evening. Festival of museums runs from the 16th-18th May 2014 with lots of museums and heritage sites across Scotland taking part. You can find out more at http://rcp.sg/FoM2014.

Our event takes place on the evening of the 16th May – We’ll be welcoming celebrated artist Hugh Buchanan to our college to talk about his beautiful paintings of old manuscripts and documents and how museums and archives have inspired his work. Take a look at Hugh’s paintings on his website at http://rcp.sg/hughb.

After Hugh’s talk there will be a chance to enjoy the beautiful collection of artworks on display in the College. The College is home to an impressive collection of art including a fine copy of J. J. Audubon’s “Birds of America”, “Scottish Mother and Child” by John Bellany and “The Stretcher Bearers” by Hugh Adam Crawford. We also house an interesting and growing number of works by young and contemporary artists, many of which have been purchased from the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts exhibitions, to which the College offers an annual prize thereby keeping alive the links between culture, the City and the College.

We’re also encouraging you to bring along your sketch pad and pencils. Why not have a go at creating your own mini-masterpiece inspired by Hugh’s work. A number of our rooms will be open for you to view and there will be items out on display for you to sketch. There may even be a wee prize for our favourite sketch of the evening!

To get the evening off to a great start there will be a hot buffet supper and wine from 6:15pm onwards (lecture starts at 7pm) – We’d love for you to come along and join us.

Tickets cost £7.50 and booking is essential. Please contact library@rcpsg.ac.uk or call 0141 221 6072.

About Us

The College’s heritage collections – including thousands of medical and surgical instruments, rare books, archives, and pictures – span over 6 centuries and are an excellent resource for exploring the history of medicine and the history of the city of Glasgow. Many items from the collections have been digitised and are available to view here. Our digitisation work is ongoing, and we add new items to the site regularly, so keep checking back to discover more.
